The Virtual Journalism Summit

Many people have reacted to online services like Second Life(SL)with mixed results. To some it has been considered ingenious while others remain undecided or resist the idea. Founder of Linden Labs, developer of SL, Philip Rosedale spoke on the subject. Rosedale has been one of the most vocal leaders defending the service time and time again from criticism.

Recent talks have regarded the mature content. Rumors have suggested that mature and explicit content be sent off to a private area in the virtual world, a virtual "Amsterdam".

Lane Merrifield one of the founders of Club Penguin was also in attendance. Unlike SL Club Penguin (CP) is virtual world for children to interact with children around the world while playing games and even publishing their own stories in a Club Penguin paper that can be read by users.

"We built this as parents. To be safe as it could possibly be, as fun as it could possibly be", says Merrifield.

Club Penguin was founded in 2005 by Merrifield and fellow parents who wanted to create a safe place for their children to go online, free of ads and material they would deem inappropriate for their children. Disney aquired CP in 2007 and has grown to over 8 million users. Surprisingly the CP paper has more readership than most Newspapers in circulation. Children can submit art, poems, stories which are screened by a few website moderators. The numbers submissions per week are now at approximately thirty thousand submissions a week.

"We are never going to globally regulate behavior", says Rosedale

Merrrifield and Rosedale both agreed that Club Penguin should definitely be regulated, however both believe that what makes SL so unique is that most of the development is done by users and allows for new opportunities in journalism and the business environment.

The next question is where will all this go? Merrifield and Rosedale believes this is only the beginning.

"It's so new and funny to me", says Merrifield," It's going to get more normal in time. With adults they are really on the fringe, but children are so much more open to adopt."

Rosedale says,"We are not even starting relative to where this is going."
